freeMagic1() idiom insertion at all sites reported by static code analysis

created use of 'alloc' local variable to track when an allocation occurred
so exit path logic is more straight forward for compiler/analyser to see
potential optimisations.
no attempt to free memory was made previously

strings.h: add #include required when strict
...
Due to use of strcasecmp() or similar C API.
Maybe HAVE_STRINGS_H is needed ? If so which platforms needs this ?
